Yet at the same time, God commands us to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16); that won't happen if we spend all our time with believers

To become a grateful person
I used to wake up in the morning thinking about all the things I had to do and all the people who needed me. I got depressed before I even got out of bed! I realized I needed an attitude adjustment. So I started meditating on one of God's character traits the moment I awoke. As I lay quietly in my bed, thinking about how awesome God is, my perspective on the day changed dramatically!

New Year is coming soon, which means it is time to begin thinking about your New Year’s resolution. While some think choosing a resolution is much easier than attempting to keep it, the goal you set at the beginning of the year has as much to do with your success as anything else. While most consider weight loss, eating healthier and making time for their spiritual self , I personally am contimplating purposefulness in ones life. Making each day and each experience as to what God wants in your life......not an easy task, huh? I pulled out my copy of Rick Warren's A Purpose Driven Life, which I think is a great way to start the New Year. I was jsut telling a friend yesterday, sometimes in life it is not always about us. Sometimes we are the sitations we are invilved in, my not be about us!

Back by popular demand the Hobb State Parks Conservation Area offers eagle watch tours on Beaver Lake November 2011 through February 2012. Upcoming tours are scheduled for December 14th, 17th, 18th, 21st, and 23rd. In order to meet the demand, additional Christmas tours will be offered December 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, and 31st. January tours begin with January 1st, 4th, 7th, and 8th.

According to Hobbs park interpreter Steve Chyrchel, “Sightings of eagles this season have been numerous. In addition to the beautiful eagles, many other species of winter wildlife present themselves on these cruises. Eagle watching on a boat is not a warm weather sport, but very exciting. It is a unique and memorable, seasonal experience for every member of the family.”

For almost three decades homeowners in this Victorian village have invited visitors inside their historic residences to share the joys of the holiday season. The tradition continues Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, 3-8 p.m., when the Eureka Springs Preservation Society hosts the 29th Annual Eureka Springs Christmas Tour of Homes.
Ten locations are participating in this year's tour, giving guests a glimpse of a bygone era. All stops on the self-guided tour will be lavishly decorated for the season with Victorian attired docents at each site to relate the history of each home. Each residence offers an opportunity to revisit the grandeur of the graceful Victorian era and its unique, enchanting homes.
Dee Bright, Preservation Society president, elaborates. "Interior details such as grand staircases, ornately carved fireplace mantels, sparkling stained glass and intricate millwork will all be decked in festive holiday trimmings."
Visitors will be treated to choir and band music, carolers, refreshments and merriment. Tour goers will also see elegant ladies adorned in their finery and dapper gentlemen dressed in tails and ties as they stroll through the only entire downtown in the country listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"Remembering Christmas past is a great way to begin making memories for Christmas present," Bright said. "The attention to detail in each of the homes makes this tour truly special for architectural buffs, history enthusiasts, and those who simply enjoy beauty for its own sake."
She concluded, "It's a lovely way to begin your holidays. If you've never been, come and immerse yourself in the magic, merriment, and mystery of a bygone era. And if you've celebrated the season with us before, we welcome your family back for this fabulous holiday tradition.

Arkansas Holiday Trail of Lights

Sixty-six towns across the state are participating in this year’s Trail of Holiday Lights campaign. The celebration, which begins Thanksgiving week and lasts through Christmas, includes official lighting ceremonies, parades, pageants, music and more. The objective is to build tourism business throughout the holidays.

“We invite visitors to visit the displays in their own areas and also experience what other towns around the state have to offer,” said Arkansas Tourism Director Joe David Rice.

Participants are encouraged to go to the Arkansas Trail of Holiday Lights Facebook fan page to share photos and offer insider tips on their town’s activities. It’s a great way to spread the holiday cheer and create lasting memories.

The trail has continued to grow every year since it began in 1996. It has been selected as a Top 100 Event for 2011 by the American Bus Association

Disc golf my be coming to Eureka Springs Lake Leatherwood park. The star-up cost, which is estimated at $7,500, will be covered by local sponsors. The proposed location will be at the entrance to baseball and soccer fields.
Disc golf is a disc game in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, "The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc." Eureka Springs is home to many historical Victorian homes, and candlelight home tours are a city highlight in December. Many of the long-running shows in Eureka Springs switch over to a holiday theme in December - the Pine Mountain Theater, for example, puts on its religious Christmas Celebration show for the last two weeks of the month. Many other musical concerts abound in December, from the Ozarks Community Chorale annual performance to a holiday flute performance by renowned Native American musician John Two-Hawks. The Eureka Springs Historical Museum will be hosting its 3rd annual “Voices from Eureka’s Silent City” cemetery tour this year on October 14th & 15th and 28th & 29th. The “living history” tour features live actors in period costumes playing the roles of early citizens of Eureka Springs reminiscing about their past. This year’s tour will feature eight residents who were involved in helping to establish Eureka Springs as an artist’s community: Singers, painters, photographers, etc.
One hour tours are scheduled to start around 5:30 p.m. and will leave every twenty minutes, the last one beginning at 8:00 p.m. Tickets, $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years old and under, may be purchased at Cornerstone Bank, Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce, the Historical Museum and at the event.

(November 25, 1846 - June 9, 1911) was a member of the temperance movement, which opposed alcohol in pre-Prohibition America. She is particularly noteworthy for promoting her viewpoint through vandalism. On many occasions Nation would enter an alcohol-serving establishment and attack the bar with a hatchet.
Nation was a large woman, almost 6 feet (180 cm) tall and weighing 175 pounds (79 kg) and of a somewhat stern countenance. She described herself as "a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn't like,"[1] and claimed a divine ordination to promote temperance by smashing up bars.

Eureka Springs Antique Car Weekend was a great success. Antique cars cruised around town all weekend long. To top it off, 200 antique cars of every make and model participated in Saturday's parade through downtown Saturday morning. Also, the 1886 Crescent Hotel hosted the 2011 Crescent Classic Rally for the KC Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America. What a sight it was to see the Crescent's parking lot filled to capacity with Ferraris.

The new 750 seat facility will be larger, fully enclosed and air-conditioned. This will allow for a longer season. Presently, the season runs for only a month. As part of their 125th anniversary year observation, August will see the Crystal Dining Room Restaurant of the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa celebrating the summer harvest with two signature events: an epicurean-style five-course dinner on Wednesday evening, August 10; and a War Eagle Mill Sunday Champagne Brunch on August 14.
“Throughout our quasquicentennial we will be taking our guests back to our roots,” said hotel general manager Jack Moyer, “and during two signature events this month we will be taking that „roots‟ word literally.
“For just as those founding fathers of the Crescent and those early guests feasted on local and area produce, we will follow suit and celebrate this year‟s summer harvest by featuring the edible abundance of our local and area farmers. Never before will history have tasted so unbelievably delicious.”
On the evening of Wednesday, August 10, guests will not have to drive the country roads of Carroll and nearby counties for fresh, summer produce. These farm-fresh food items are being delivered to the Crystal Dining Room Restaurant in time to prepare Greater Eureka Springs' first-ever “Farm-to-Table Dinner”.
This gala evening event will feature produce and other locally and organically provided food items that will be transformed by the professional chefs of the Crystal Dining Room Restaurant into a five-course epicurean-style meal that will begin being served at six o‟clock. Preceding the dinner, guests will be able to sample both organic red and organic white wine offerings from a French vintner. A cash bar will also be available.
Two well-known and well-respected area organic farmers, Patrice Gros and Andrew Schwerin, are joining Michael Jaschke, executive chef for the Crystal Dining Room Restaurant, in producing this effort. Both have been instrumental in bringing to Eureka Springs‟ area
residents a weekly Farmers‟ Market. Some of the farmers who sell their produce at that market will be providing many of the key ingredients for the five-course feast.
Menu items to be featured during the evening include Bruschetta: Tomato and Cucumber Salad with Greek Vinaigrette; Trio of Baked Eggplant with Sautéed Arugula and Southern Beans; Grilled Squash with Sautéed Bell Peppers and Okra; Entrée de Porc with a Blueberry Sauce; and for dessert, a Peach Clafoutti.
Providers include Ozark Natural Foods, Slow Food (Fayetteville Chapter), Eureka Springs Farmers Market, Oak Hill Farm, Foundation Farm, Dripping Springs Gardens, Homestead Farms, Fiddlehead Farm, Shady Grove Farm, Roaring River Bread Company, Raspberry Ridge Farm, and RP Beef.
Jaschke outlined the reason for the event, “We could not be prouder of our local area farmers. We, along with other local restaurants, utilize the products of these farmers whenever possible. This dinner is an effort to showcase their products while putting the spotlight squarely on the fresh, locally-grown foods as they go directly from the farms to our tables; fresh and delicious.”
Cost for the five-course epicurean-style dinner is $40 per person. This price includes the wine tasting which begins at 5:00 p.m.
“Seating is limited,” Jaschke explained, “so patrons interested in attending this one-of-a-kind taste full soiree should purchase tickets as soon as possible.”
Tickets are on sale at the weekly Eureka Springs Farmers‟ Market located in the Pine Mountain Village on Highway 62 East, plus other locations that include Carroll County Fresh, Eureka Market, and Community First Banks in Eureka Springs and Berryville.
A “natural” follow up to Wednesday‟s dinner is the transformation of the Crystal Dining Room‟s famous Champagne Sunday Brunch into one that will feature products from nearby War Eagle Mill (WEM). This historic grinding mill, located of Highway 12 between Eureka Springs and Rogers, utilizes a huge buhrstone powered by the natural flow of War Eagle Creek. It was purchased in 2004 by Marty and Elise Roenigk.
“This facility, which is one of Arkansas‟ top „working‟ tourist attractions, has built a proud reputation of using only the finest quality grains which are ground fresh daily. It was the health-oriented aspect of this historic business that enticed the Roenigks to preserve The Mill,” Moyer noted.
Featured in the August 14 brunch will be two kind of pancakes –prepared right before your eyes- utilizing WEM‟s Buckwheat and Blue Cornmeal, WEM syrups, a catfish fry utilizing WEM fish batter, ham and beans utilizing WEM Bean Mix and ham from Garner Hill Farms, and WEM cornbread with WEM jams and jellies. This is in addition to the normal abundant array of taste treats offered weekly by the professional culinary staff of the Crystal Dining Room and served each Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Champagne is served tableside.

Students 16-25 years old and students 15 years old and younger will compete in two separate competitions. The concert series takes place during the Suzuki Summer Institute, which offers the Suzuki string program for young children, as well as classes for parents so they can help their young music students practice. The parents are also taught how to create a better music environment for the child. Courses will also be available in piano, woodwind and brass, guitar, voice, along with vocational and semi-professional courses for all those instruments plus conducting. Hobbs State Park Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower

Often when we try to view a meteor shower the moon is too bright or there is too much light pollution emanating from urban illumination sources for us to view these rapid events in the night sky. Such will not be the case for those viewing the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower at Hobbs State Park on Friday July 29, 2011. At the park’s visitor center there will be no urban light pollution, and coincidently no moon that night. If there are no clouds, the meteor shower viewing should be ideal.

Every year the Earth passes through many trails of comets, old remnants from the solar system formation, and many other collections of dusty debris and small tracks of asteroids. These dusty remains are the artifacts of many before that have collided with countless planets, moons, or other objects in their long cycle of spinning around the sun. In July, the trails of Temple P1 and other remnants will "broadside" us and will be visible to naked eye observers. Some of these meteors will be bright with a flash, while others will appear as just streaks of yellow and green as they pass harmlessly into our atmosphere.

Adventure Subaru and Progressive Trail Design again are proud to present the 2011 Eureka Springs Fat Tire Festival, July 15th-17th. This year again promises to be bigger and better than ever. The 2011 Fatty Fest has officially been coined “The Year of the Kid”. We will be hosting a massive ”Kids Bike Rodeo”. On the slate of activities are skills courses and clinics, barrel races, games, water feature, food, fun, sun and more.

Here are the hollyhocks close up and you guessed it, another one from a smaller plant. Once again though you have to be patient. Hollyhocks are mostly a biennial flower. Plant one year to enjoy the next. I have some "old fashioned" ones started now that are supposed to keep coming back year after year, we sure hope so! I bought my Hollyhock from American Meadows.

Local aficionado of Native American traditions, Mike Goff, will speak at Hobbs State Park – Conservation Area on Saturday June 25th at 2:00 p.m. He will detail how feathers were used in recording war honors, primitive hide tanning, why specific clothing was worn on select occasions, sun dancing, vision seeking, plus weapons and their use.
