Students First for Education

It was a rare occasion that I was watching the Oprah show, well a rare occasion that I was TV at all.  Oprah was interviewing  Michelle Rhee, former D.C. Education Chancellor and founder of  Rhee drew national attention by firing teachers who's students recieved failing test score on standardized tests.  Rhee favored measuring teacher quality by students’ test scores, firing underperforming instructors and pushing merit pay.

In a press conference Rhee stated “My goal is to continue to serve the children of this nation,”
Rhee's goal is to transform America's Public Schools.  Her grass roots organization Students First plan to help organize an national movement to defend the interests of children in public education and pursue transformative reform, so that America has the best education system in the world.

According to Rhee "America's schools are failing our kids. On this point, the data is clear. While some people blame the kids, or simply want to throw more money at the problem, we know that real change requires a better system — one that puts students' needs before those of special interests or wasteful bureaucracies." The organization plans to work with parents, teachers and schools to make sure that all schools have great teachers and use public funds effectively.
